Missoula will remain in the deep freeze..for now, but more snow and even freezing rain is in the extended forecast.

The National Weather Service is calling for this frigid weather to continue till the end of the week, but that's when things could get very interesting.

Meteorologist Jeff Kitzmiller said two systems will combine by the weekend.

"Looking on past the end of the week, we'll have all this cold air sitting in the valleys and then we'll get this nice warm weather system that will come in by about Saturday, but especially on Sunday, and that one should be a pretty good snow producer at least in the beginning," Kitzmiller said. "This will mean snow for everybody, the mountains and the valleys while we're cold. Then, it gets a little tricky as we get into Monday because with all the warm air that's when we start worrying about some freezing rain because the valleys are still cold, and we'll be looking closely at that on Monday."

The freezing rain could bring about hazardous driving conditions, especially during busy commuting hours.

Kitzmiller said there is a line of weather systems that will be moving through the area next week.

"As far out as I'm looking, which is through the end of next week, it looks like a much more wet pattern," he said. "We could have many inches of snow here in the valleys, but farther north and in the higher elevations we could be receiving up to a foot of snow. All these systems have their subtle differences, but each one could bring more snow."

Kitzmiller said temperatures will be rising by next week, with possible highs in the 30's and lows in the teens.
