Firefighters Battle Small Blaze Near Evaro [YouTube]

Personnel from Frenchtown Fire knocked down a blaze near Evaro on Friday afternoon.

Public Information Officer Mel Holtz said the fire started when a homeowner's open burning project ran away from him.

"We were up on the Evaro Hill area," Holtz said. "We got a call that said there were two acres on fire, but when we got on scene we found the fire was actually only about two-tenths of an acre, but it was in steep and rocky terrain, so crews had a bit of a hard time accessing the area."

Holtz said crews were quickly able to get a line around the fire to keep it from spreading.

"We were able to get wet line around it right away and then spent an hour or two mopping up," he said. "The homeowner was doing some open burning but the winds picked up and pushed the fire up the mountainside. It is getting dry out there, as we haven't had much moisture in April, and now we're into May. Conditions are dry and windy, and so we encourage anyone with a burn permit to watch the weather forecast and make sure you have the tools and people available to keep it under control."

Holtz said no one was injured and no property was damaged by the fire.
