A Missoula policeman was wounded Wednesday, April 15, after what first appeared to be a routine 911 response to a local business.

“A call came into 911 about a male in a business on the 500 block of North Higgins,” said Missoula Police Public Information officer Travis Welsh. “[The 911 caller] said that they felt he was under the influence of something and was not acting rationally. Officers responded, they did find him inside the building and attempted to identify him, but he gave them a fictitious name and refused to identify himself accurately.”

The man was later identified as Charles David Amendt, but only after the incident spiraled into violence.

“Mr. Amendt pulled free and started to run from the officers in the building," Welsh said. "They caught up with him, proceeded to take him into custody, but he proceeded to resist arrest and fight with the arresting officers. During the course of that struggle, he kicked officer [Nathan] Mattix in the face."

Officer Nathan Mattix's glasses were knocked off and he received minor injuries, he but did not need to be hospitalized.

It now appears that Amendt was prohibited from attending an anger counseling session because of his odd behavior. Amendt was charged with assaulting and obstructing a police officer as well as resisting arrest. He is now being held in the Missoula county jail on $100,000 bond.
