A University of Montana student, Kole Swartz, 18, was killed early Sunday morning as the result of an accidental shooting.

Missoula County Sheriff T.J. McDermott issued a press release stating that Swartz, who lived in Clinton, was handling a firearm at his home when it discharged, resulting in his death. Swartz was a graduate of Hellgate High School, and played football for the Knights.

A source at the University of Montana said that Swartz was recruited and signed to play football, but currently was not an active member of the team.

No other details have been made available by the Missoula County Sheriff's Office.
