The Bitterroot Mushers will hold their 8th annual ‘Darby Dog Derby’ this weekend. Organizer Nicki Arndt said there will be two days of racing.

"We will have ski joering, which is the dogs pulling people on skis. There's two classes of ski joering, the two mile and the six mile and they can use one to two dogs," Arndt said. "We have eight-dog teams that will be running about 24 miles, six-dog teams that are doing about 14 to 15 miles, and four-dog teams that will be doing six miles. Then we have two-dog junior teams that are doing two miles."

Arndt said the race is fairly well known, as top racers like Iditarod competitor Terry Adkins has also raced in the Darby Dog Derby.

"Races start at 9:30 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. We start with the ski joerers and then the teams start leaving at 10:30 a.m.," Arndt said. "There is no cost for admission. It is on the Gibbons Pass Road in the snowmobile parking lot. I suggest you park either at the Lost Trail Ski Resort parking lot, or there's a few turnoffs on the highway. Please don't park on the highway unless you want your vehicle towed, as that does happen."

Arndt said there is also a ‘Pee Wee’ race for ages 4-10, scheduled Saturday afternoon between 1 and 2 p.m. when the other races conclude.
