Missoula police are investigating a dead body found in the Clark Fork River on Saturday afternoon.

Public Information Officer Travis Welsh said the body was spotted just before 2:00 p.m. in the 500 to 600 block of West Broadway.

"The body was half-in and half-out of the water," Welsh said. "Officers and EMS determined that the man was deceased. He is a white male who appeared to be in his 50's.  He was fully clothed wearing jeans, and a jacket over a tee-shirt, and he was wearing shoes."

Welsh said detectives searched for any sign of foul play.

"There's no sign of physical trauma yet, but they have not been able to do a full examination of the body, but so far, we're just working the scene," he said. "Investigators are saying that given the condition of the body, that it doesn't look like the man had been in the water a terribly long time, not long enough for any of the body processes at the end of life to start taking place."

Welsh said once the police have completed their investigation, that the body will be taken to the State Crime Lab, and then the Missoula County Coroner will release the name, cause and manner of death through the sheriff's office once the man's next of kin have been notified.

The investigation into the man's death is ongoing.
