Celebrating 50 Years of Maggot Fest: A Missoula Tradition

One of Missoula’s biggest and most legendary weekends is here, as the Missoula All-Maggots Rugby Club celebrates 50 years of Maggot Fest, a tradition that has become just as famous for its unforgettable atmosphere as it is for the rugby itself.

An International Rugby Gathering: Teams from Around the World

For five decades, Maggot Fest has brought teams from all over the world to western Montana. Clubs travel in from across the United States, Canada, and overseas every year to compete in one of the most unique rugby tournaments anywhere. What started as a local rugby gathering has grown into an international event that has become a major part of Missoula culture.

Festivities officially get underway Friday night, with tournament action continuing through the weekend. The games begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at Fort Missoula Regional Park, where fans can catch nonstop rugby action featuring athletes and teams from around the globe.

But Maggot Fest is about much more than rugby. Saturday night will feature a street party downtown as part of the celebration, with Ryman Street expected to close in front of Bodega and Monks Bar for a massive block party after the games.

The Real Challenge: Recovering for Sunday’s Games

Longtime Maggot Fest veterans often joke that the toughest part of the tournament is not playing on Saturday. It is getting back on the field Sunday morning.

Anyone heading to Maggot Fest this weekend can expect much more than just rugby. You will likely see costumes, hear accents from around the world, and experience one of the most entertaining and energetic weekends Missoula has to offer. Along with the wild atmosphere comes some truly impressive athleticism and high-level competition on the field.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Missoula's Betterside women's rugby team.

For those interested in getting involved themselves, the Maggots are always looking for new players. If you have ever wanted to learn rugby or become part of one of Missoula’s most iconic organizations, this weekend is the perfect opportunity to check it out.
