Is This Missoula’s Most Confusing Intersection?

Certain intersections can be particularly frustrating for drivers. Whether you're a local or not, some of these spots can be a real headache. Most major intersections around town are controlled by traffic lights, stop signs, or the dreaded roundabout. For me, four-way stops are some of the most challenging, especially the busy ones. It doesn't seem like everyone knows the laws regarding them. My grandfather used to do everything he could to avoid four-way stops in Missoula. He would say they made him “admit defeat,” and he didn't like that. He was a very aggressive driver. For those who need a refresher, Top Driver provides helpful guidelines for navigating four-way stops.
There is one intersection that, even though there are signs to help drivers, is confusing for people, and no it isn't located anywhere near Reserve. It's the intersection of Arthur and South Avenue, by the University of Montana. Unless you are a local and know how this intersection works you may have no idea what is going on.
The intersection is even hard to explain to someone. Heading East on South Avenue there is a stop sign. Heading West on South Avenue there is no stop sign and people can turn left onto Arthur at will. Heading South on Arthur there is a stop sign on the inside lane for a car to make a left turn only. If you want to make a right turn onto South Avenue you don't have to stop you get to use the "Right Lane Free Turn" sign. The drivers who are at the stop sign on South Avenue can't see the "Right Lane Free Turn". They may have no idea when they can safely leave the stop sign and continue on their way.
Easy right? I have had relatives visiting Missoula and have been freaked out when we use the "Free Turn" lane and there is a vehicle at the stop sign on South Avenue. Driving around in other parts of the world, I don't think I have ever seen a sign quite like the one in Missoula. For some it's endearing because it is maybe something that is uniquely Missoula. For others it's a confusing traffic situation that should be changed.
As Missoula continues to grow, addressing these traffic challenges could be essential in making the city safer and more accessible for everyone. While some may find charm in the city's quirks, ensuring that roadways are intuitive for both locals and visitors alike is crucial for Missoula's continued growth and development.
