What are the sources you consult when you're considering a move?

Whether you're upsizing, downsizing, choosing something better, or needing to find something different, moving is inevitable for a lot of people. And whether that move is across the country or town, usually a little research is required.

Many people will ask friends or acquaintances when moving, "Hey, do you know anything about that neighborhood?" or maybe do a little Googling. Then again, you might find yourself stumbling on something like this, and you'll be left wondering how accurate it is or not.

Using Hoodmaps to Review Montana Cities

Have you ever heard of Hoodmaps? I learned about it on social media. At first glance, it looks a little like Google Maps, but then you'll notice it has details you won't find on Google.

Hoodmaps gives you an informal look at just about any city in the world. According to a story from Fox5 San Diego, the map was created by a developer from Amsterdam named Pieter Levels and the information in the map is crowdsourced. Type in Warsaw, Poland, and you'll find just as many cheeky descriptions as you'll find in New York City. It also has descriptions for, you guessed it, Montana cities.

Some Montana cities don't have a lot of information, like Helena or Great Falls, and some don't have any information yet: Butte, Kalispell, and Livingston to name a few.

If you want to see which cities do have descriptions, you can take a look at hoodmaps.com. You can also vote on the descriptions.

Data-Driven Information on Missoula's Neighborhoods

While Hoodmaps is amusing, more reliable information is available. In Missoula, the City compiled data from a variety of sources and created Neighborhood Profiles that provide relatively recent demographic information. Read more about Missoula Neighborhoods and get an idea of who else lives in East Missoula and the Rattlesnake, for example, besides the "dirty hippies."
