Nine New Veterans Bills Become Law

This week, new bills strengthening U.S. veterans were signed into law in Washington, D.C. President Joe Biden (photo above) was surrounded by the bills' supporters, including Montana Senator Jon Tester.

Tester was author of three of the nine bills. He is the current Chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, and has conducted numerous hearings on veterans' issues. His bills were:

  • "Strengthening Oversight for Veterans Act of 2021," which increases oversight for the VA Office of Inspector General.
  • "Making Advances in Mammography and Medical Options (MAMMO) for Veterans Act," which increases vet access to breast cancer screening and partners with the National Cancer Institute to upgrade the imaging services.
  • "Department of Veterans Affairs facility-naming process" amendment, which allows the name of a VA facility to more easily retain its name in the case of a relocation of the building. He said this specifically applies to the David J. Thatcher VA Clinic in Missoula.

    • The other six bills included the "Veterans Rapid Retraining Assistance Program Restoration and Recovery Act," the "Dr. Kate Hendricks Thomas SERVICE Act," and legislation to rename VA medical clinics in Hawaii and Utah.

    The bipartisan bills were signed at the White House, and Sen. Tester said in a news release, "Today is a great day for veterans in Montana and across the country...I'm proud to have worked hand-in-hand with Senator Boozeman, our Senate colleagues, and veteran stakeholders to deliver these wins for the men and women who serviced and sacrificed."
