(UPDATE: 2:08 PM on 4/23/25)

This morning, shortly after 8:00 a.m., the 911 dispatch center received a call reporting that a male had been stabbed with a knife in the 1700 block of Cooley Street. According to Police Public Information Officer Whitney Bennett, patrol officers responded immediately and located the victim, who was transported by ambulance for medical treatment.
"Through the course of the initial response, it was determined that the suspect was inside a nearby residence with other individuals," Bennett said. "The Missoula Police Department activated its Special Teams, including SWAT and Negotiators, and safely evacuated uninvolved parties from the home. MPD Negotiators were able to establish contact with the suspect, a 50-year-old male, and arranged for his surrender."
As part of the operation, Bennett said SWAT deployed Noise Flash Distraction Device, a less-lethal tool used to assist in gaining compliance.
"The suspect was then taken into custody by the MPD SWAT Team without further incident," Bennett said. "He has been arrested for Assault with a Weapon. The investigation remains ongoing. Upon entering the residence, officers identified a secondary threat, which prompted additional evacuations out of an abundance of caution."
The Missoula Fire Department responded to assist.
"Once the secondary threat was mitigated, investigators continued their work inside the home," Bennett said. "The shelter-in-place advisory for the surrounding neighborhood has since been lifted, and there is no ongoing threat to the public."

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
