Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On May 7, 2026, a Missoula County Sheriff's Office Deputy responded to a report of an attempted burglary on a storage unit that occurred a few days earlier. On May 2, at around midnight, a person was seen on surveillance video attempting to break a lock on a storage unit. The attempt lasted approximately 10 minutes, causing damage to the lock, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

The owner of the unit discovered the attempted break-in and reported it. The suspect entered the unit in a U-Haul. A gate code belonging to someone else was used to enter the premises. On May 3, before this was reported, a deputy had initiated a traffic stop on this U-Haul with the same identification number. The U-Haul was driven by 41-year-old Joshua Oulman, and his wife was a passenger. A U-Haul spokesman confirmed that Oulman’s wife had rented this vehicle from 4/29-5/4/26.

The deputy went to Oulman’s address in Frenchtown and learned that they lived with the person whose gate code was used. The deputy made contact with Oulman’s wife. She said they had been driving the U-Haul and had helped their roommate move out of a storage unit earlier on May 1.

She could not confirm if Joshua left the home later in the night of 5/1 or 5/2. No one else drove the U-Haul except her and Joshua. The roommate said that she had given Joshua the code to the storage premises to help her move out. She said if the gate code was used later in the day, that would be Joshua. There was a set of bolt cutters on the patio of the home. She said she had not put them there. They had been in her basement, where Joshua was staying.

Another deputy assisted with the investigation and interviewed Joshua after Miranda advisory was given. He said only he and his wife had operated the U-Haul. Joshua said the person on the surveillance must just be someone who looks like him and that there are many U-Hauls around Missoula.
