Physician Accused of Sexual Assault at Missoula Hospital

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On May 9, 2024, at 12:20 PM, the Missoula County Attorney’s Office sent out a statement regarding the criminal charges filed against a local physician accused of sexual assault. County Attorney Matt Jennings said his office is encouraging anyone who may have additional relevant information to contact law enforcement.  

“The County Attorney’s Office filed charges against Dr. Tyler James Hurst earlier this month,” Jennings said. “The charges stem from allegations of sexual assault made by multiple patients Hurst treated in the Community Medical Center emergency room in 2023.” 

Anyone with additional information, including patients who may have had similar experiences, should contact Missoula Police Department Detective Erickson at 406-552-6291.  

Jennings also encourages survivors of sexual violence to call the Crime Victim Advocate’s Office at 406-258-3830 for free and confidential supportive services.  

“Hurst is currently charged with sexual intercourse without consent, a felony; two misdemeanor counts of sexual assault; and one felony count of sexual assault,” Jennings said. “Hurst faces a maximum potential sentence of 25 years to life in the Montana State Prison if convicted on the felony charges and up to a year and six months in the Missoula County Detention Facility if convicted on the misdemeanor charges. He faces maximum potential fines of $61,500.”

According to Jennings, Hurst was employed by a local physician’s group that contracted with Community Medical Center to provide services.  

“Community Medical Center has terminated his clinical privileges, and the hospital has cooperated with the ongoing investigation,” Jennings said. “Deputy County Attorney Brielle Lande is prosecuting the case. As with all defendants, Hurst is presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
