Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On June 27, 2025, at approximately 1:13 pm, Missoula Police Department officers were dispatched to a report of a passed-out driver behind the wheel of a vehicle at a gas pump at Jays Food Store on W. Broadway Street. The officers located the vehicle, which was running but parked at a gas pump. As the Officers approached the vehicle, they observed a piece of tin foil on the center console with what appeared to be burnt drug residue.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as 40-year-old Tyson Heisler, was passed out behind the wheel of the vehicle but appeared to be breathing. An officer woke Tyson by knocking on the driver’s side window. Tyson denied needing any medical attention, had difficulty removing his driver’s license from his wallet, and appeared to struggle with fine motor skills.

The officer asked Tyson to step out of the vehicle and asked why he was asleep at the wheel. According to court documents, Tyson stated that he was under the influence of fentanyl. Specifically, Tyson told the officers that he had smoked powdered fentanyl inside his vehicle about 10 minutes prior to the officers’ arrival on scene.

Officer Discovers Fentanyl

The officer conducted a pat search for weapons and located what felt like a small amount of drugs in Tyson’s pants pocket. Tyson granted permission to remove the item from his pocket and stated that the bag contained fentanyl.

Thereafter, the officer conducted Standardized Field Sobriety Testing and observed 7 out of 16 clues of impairment. The officer placed Tyson under arrest for DUI, read him the Implied Consent Advisory, and requested a blood sample, which he agreed to. He was transported to St. Patrick Hospital, where two vials of blood were drawn.

Another officer learned through dispatch that Tyson was on probation. The officer contacted the on-call probation officer, who authorized and requested a search of Tyson’s vehicle and person.
