At approximately 7:04 p.m. on September 15, 2022, a Missoula Police Department officer responded to Downtown Lions Park for a report of an incident involving a bow and arrow. The initial reports stated a male in the park was shooting a bow, an arrow came into the backyard and struck the caller, and the male was waving around a taser. Police Public Information Officer Lydia Arnold picks up the story.

“On the scene, officers located a male who they recognized through prior law enforcement contacts as Trenten Holmgren,” Arnold said. “Next to Holmgren, they observed a bow and arrow. Officers also located a taser on Holmgren’s person. Holmgren told officers he was shooting for fun and did not realize the bow would shoot the arrow so far. The park where Holmgren was located is a local city park and relatively small in size.”

The officer observed one arrow to have a "field point" type of tip. These kinds of tips are generally pointed, but are not sharp, and are most commonly used for target practice. However, they are still likely to cause serious bodily injury if they hit a person in a soft tissue area without first being deflected.

The second arrow had a "broadhead" attached. These kinds of tips are designed and marketed for hunting and are designed to kill animals.

“The caller to 911 reported an arrow struck a juvenile in the foot,” Arnold said. “There was no injury, but fear for being in the area where arrows were being shot. Prior to an arrow striking the juvenile in the foot, the caller told Holmgren to stop shooting arrows in the park. A witness observed the arrow go past another juvenile's head before striking the juvenile in the foot. Holmgren was arrested and taken into custody.”

Holmgren is currently being charged with one count of felony criminal endangerment.
