Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On August 8, KGVO published a story about how the Missoula Organization of Realtors was accepting applications from Missoulians whose homes were damaged in the July 25 wind event.

On Wednesday, I spoke with Sheena Winterer, the 2025 President-Elect of the Missoula Organization of Realtors, who provided details of just how much relief was received by local homeowners.

The Missoula Organization of Realtors Gave Out Over $300,000 in Storm Relief

“We received an extraordinary amount of applications for the damage,” began Winterer. “The storm was just really front and center and all those applications, and we were just really proud to be able to help, and we did give out I think it was around $316,000.”

Winterer said the MOR was limited on the amount available for each applicant.

“We felt really privileged to be able to help, because there were people that had significant amounts of damage, and our funds were only able to be up to $2,000 per person, depending on the circumstances of their damage,” she said. “I think however that that amount of money can really be a helping hand when you're dealing with insurance claims or because the application funds came out quickly, and I think it was a bridge that people needed.”

She Said Realtors Were Anxious to Help After the Wind Event

Winterer said because realtors are working with Missoulians and those moving here on a personal basis, they were anxious to help after the storm.

“As realtors, we’re in the community all the time, and we know how hard things can be, how unaffordable things can be sometimes,” she said. “To be able to just bring a little bit of relief in the housing realm even although it was on the heels of a terrible storm was really meaningful to us.”

The National Association of Realtors is Now Helping With Hurricane Relief

She said the National Association of Realtors is also helping the areas devastated by hurricanes in Florida and North Carolina.

“What's great is the National Organization of Realtors covers operational costs,” she said. “Dollar for dollar, when people contribute to the foundation, it all gets given out. The foundation is really active right now in the South dealing with hurricane relief. I think it's too early to say numbers down there, but it's just been really generous over the years with all kinds of disasters.”

Winterer said her office has received numerous thank you notes for the monies received to help with storm repairs.

The Aftermath of the Severe Thunderstorm in Missoula, Montana - July 2024

The National Weather Service cited 80 mph winds at the Missoula Montana Airport and over 100 mph winds at the apex of Mount Sentinel. Powerful winds left behind a path of broken trees, downed power lines, failing traffic lights, and debris as far as the eye can see.
