Major Merger Possible for Billings and Kalispell Hospitals

Big news for the big hospitals based in both Billings and Kalispell, Montana.

Billings Clinic already has multiple hospitals and clinics across the state and region. Kalispell Regional Health, meanwhile, recently merged with other hospitals in Central and NW Montana to become Logan Health. Now, Billings Clinic and Logan Health are eyeing a merger.

According to press releases sent out by both Billings Clinic and Logan Health, the two hospitals hope to finalize an arrangement this Spring.

Two not-for-profit Montana-based health systems announced today (Wednesday) that they have signed a non-binding letter of intent to explore uniting the two organizations into one integrated, independent, Montana-based health system. The goal of the combined entity will be to enhance access, service and quality health care for the region.

Dr. Clint Seger, the CEO of Billings Clinic touted the similarities between the two Montana hospitals.

Dr. Seger: Our two organizations have a lot in common, as independent, physician-led health systems with deep roots in our communities and a commitment to rural health care. The health needs of our rural communities are unique, and we are excited to explore ways to serve our patients’ greatest challenges and raise the bar for health care in Montana and Wyoming together.

According to the fact sheet provided by both hospital systems, Logan Health is a 622-bed system covering 20 counties, and has more than 4,500 employees.

How big is Billings Clinic?

According to that same fact sheet, Billings Clinic "is Montana’s largest independent health system, serving Montana, Wyoming and the western Dakotas." Billings Clinic has more than 4,700 employees. As a system, "Billings Clinic has more than 20 regional partnerships, including management agreements with 18 Critical Access Hospitals in Montana and Wyoming and one outpatient clinic, and four regional branch clinics."
