Heads Up for Montana Archery and Upland Game Bird Hunters

The grizzlies are not as endangered as some want you to think they are, so heads up- as you upland bird and archery hunters definitely could be in danger.

That's part of an important reminder sent out to upland game bird and archery hunters this September by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

Upland game bird season just opened up on September 1st, and archery season opened September 6th.

As the battle over finally removing grizzlies from the endangered species list continues, just remember- there's a reason that FWP is reminding you to be "Bear Aware" this month. It's because there are a LOT of grizzly bears out here in Montana (which should be more than enough reason for the grizzlies to have been de-listed long ago IMHO).

"Bear activity begins to increase in September as they look to put on weight in advance of winter hibernation," warned FWP in a recent press release. Grizzly bears can be found anywhere in the western two-thirds of Montana, and their distribution is denser and more widespread than in previous years. Some areas with dense concentrations of grizzly bears are very accessible to hunters."

FWP issued a few friendly reminders like making sure you carry and know how to use bear spray, that you hunt in groups so you have someone to watch your back (especially when gutting your carcass), and to be sure and clean and remove your carcass as soon as possible.

Here's a special precaution for bird hunters:

Bird hunters should be extra careful while walking in and along areas of brush, especially along waterways. Grizzly bears use thick cover for day beds. Walk with the wind, carry bear spray and keep a close eye on hunting dogs. If there is abundant fresh sign of grizzly bears in the area, consider bird hunting somewhere else.
