He says he never thought growing up in Montana that someday he'd be making history with President Donald J. Trump. And then to be seated with the Trump family between Donald Trump Jr. and President Trump last week at the Republican National Convention- Montana's US Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) says it is a night he will never forget.

Just days after President Trump was shot and survived an assassination attempt, Daines was sitting with the president on the eve of his remarks to the RNC.

What did Senator Daines say to President Trump, I asked on Monday:

Senator Daines: "I said to him quietly, I said, Mr. President, it was a quarter of an inch that separated tonight from being a funeral versus a celebration of nominating you as our next President of the United States. It was a reflective moment, and the President has been changed by what happened a week ago Saturday, and how would it not? Every human when you literally dodge an assassin's bullet like he did, you are reminded that your days are numbered. And he's gotten extra days by the grace of God."

We also talked about Vice President Kamala Harris (D-MT) and whether or not she helps Democrats in down ballot races like here in Montana.  Daines stressed the importance of Montanans voting for Navy SEAL veteran Tim Sheehy in the US Senate race.

Senator Daines: "They're (the Democrats) desperate. They had no other options. They were having a debate, the Democrats. Do we go forward with a wounded Joe Biden or a damaged Kamala Harris? That was the choice they had, they only had really one choice to make because they couldn't go forward with Biden because mentally he can't do it, so they've got Kamala Harris. I don't think that dog is going to hunt real well here in states like Montana.

Daines also talked about the newcomers that are moving to Montana.

He says they've been studying this. Two thirds of the Californians who have fled that state are voting Republican. They know that Kamala Harris is a liberal radical from California.

Senator Daines: "They don't want to see Kamala Harris elected president. I think they fled California to get away from that."
