This week is Child Passenger Safety Week and to commemorate, Safe Kids Missoula Coordinator Dannette Fadness said Safe Kids Worldwide is reminding parents to register their child’s car seat.

"One of the important things that Safe Kids Worldwide has discovered is that parents aren't registering their car seats. So then if something happens and they have a recall, they don't know," Fadness said. "So we're really encouraging parents to get out and either register online with their car seat manufacturer, or when you buy a car seat, fill out that card and send it in."

Fadness said on Saturday, Missoula Rural Fire is teaming up with Buckle Up Montana on National Child Passenger Safety Day to help families with car seat safety.

"Missoula Rural Fire will host an event and it is by appointment, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can call for an appointment at (406) 549-6172. They'll help you get your car seat buckled in appropriately and teach you how to do that," Fadness said. "People often have to move their seats from car to car so its instruction for parents and grandparents so they can make sure those seats are securely put into their cars."

In 2014, more than six million car seats were recalled for a safety defect – the largest car seat recall in U.S.history. To find out if your car seat is recalled, click here.
