Missoula police officers were called to the downtown area twice on Sunday evening for reports of shots having been fired.

Sergeant Matt Stonesifer provided details.

“At about 5:53 p.m. on Sunday, police were notified about multiple 9-1-1 calls of shots fired by a male suspect in the 500 block of West Broadway,” said Stonesifer. “Officers were advised that the suspect was last seen leaving the area on foot. Officers responded to that location and established a perimeter. At 6:05 p.m. while officers were searching for a suspect, 9-1-1 received another report of multiple shots heard within the perimeter in the 800 block of Toole Avenue. Officers responded to that location and found no evidence that another incident had occurred.”

After an investigation, Stonesifer said that both reports proved to be false.

“After further investigation in the 500 block of West Broadway, reports of shots fired were unfounded and that a large rock had been thrown through an exterior window,” he said. “A suspect in the original incident, a 43 year-old man from Missoula was arrested by Missoula Police at 6:33 p.m. He is currently being held in the Missoula County Detention Facility on charges of felony criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and obstructing a peace officer. The police department does not believe there is a threat to the community at this time.”
