Safe Kids Missoula is inviting kids and their parents to the Missoula Family YMCA on Saturday to take part in the annual Healthy Kids Day.

Operations and Program Manager Kira Huck said Safe Kids Day will be a part of the event at the YMCA.

“Safe Kids Missoula is participating in those activities on Saturday, and we will be hosting some fun games at the Missoula Family YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day,” Huck said. “We’ll have hands-on activities that will teach some basic safety skills. This year we’re going to focus on medicine safety, pedestrian safety, liquid laundry packet safety and water safety.”

Huck said there will be life-size games for kids to participate in at the event.

“A couple of the games are life-size versions of popular kid’s games,” she said. “The pedestrian safety game is called ‘Crosswalks and Slides’, and it’s a life-size version of ‘Chutes and Ladders’ that teaches kids some pedestrian safety skills. There’ll also be some growth charts for the medicine safety game where kids can jump and show their parents how high they can reach to reinforce to parents how important it is to store medicine up and away from children.”

Huck said preventable injuries are the leading cause of death for children in the United States and in Montana. The Safe Kids Day activities and events across the country are made possible with support from Johnson & Johnson, FedEx, Nationwide and Tide.
