A semi-truck hauling a pup trailer filled with gas overturned on Highway 10 near Alberton Wednesday evening, rolling down a ravine and spilling thousands of gallons of gasoline.

Spokesman for Frenchtown Fire, Mel Holtz said the accident occurred a little before 5 p.m.

"Just before 5 we received a call for a semi-truck hauling a trailer full of gasoline that had rolled down an embankment off the roadway between a rock cliff and a small ravine," Holtz said. "Frenchtown Fire responded along with a regional haz-mat team, the health department and many law enforcement personnel are also on the scene."

Holtz said the accident occurred off Roscoe Road near Highway 10 not far from Alberton.

"The truck rolled around a sharp corner that has been known to cause problems for drivers in the past," he said. "The tanker was carrying a total of over 6,000 gallons of fuel, and one compartment broke open and spilled about 2,200 gallons onto the road and down into a ravine. We're stabilizing the other two tanks at this time."

Holtz said there are no creeks or rivers in the area, so the gas is being absorbed into the ground. He said there is a slight chance of fire.

"You can see the photos on our Facebook page how the tanker is up against some rocks, so if it shifts the wrong way there could be some sparks, so that's definitely a safety concern that we have, so we're asking the public to stay away from the scene, and we do have Highway 10 shut down for the moment."

No one was injured in the accident.

Holtz filed this report just after 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday night.
