Montana U.S. House Candidate Mike Fellows Killed in Head-On Crash
Libertarian Mike Fellows, a consistent figure in Montana politics, has passed away after a tragic accident on Hwy 200 last night, September 20.
"Just after 9:00 P.M. we were called to an accident on Hwy 200 near at mile marker 16 and a half," said Missoula County Undersheriff Jason Johnson. "It appears that Mike Fellows, who was the sole occupant of a vehicle traveling westbound on highway 200 when he collided head-on with another vehicle and unfortunately that crash resulted in Mr. Fellows' death."
The other vehicle was driven by a woman who had a broken ankle as a result of the crash. Fellows was transported to the Montana State Medical Examiner’s office in order to assist in determining the cause of the incident. Johnson, who was at the scene of the crash indicated that Fellows' car likely crossed into the wrong lane.
"It is believed at this point, that Mr. Fellow's vehicle was in the other lane, at least a portion of it. It wasn't a direct head-on crash, at least a quarter of the vehicles were significantly damaged in the crash," Johnson said. "This is speculation at this point, but he may have had a medical issue that resulted in the crash."
Fellows was running for Montana's Lone U.S. House Seat against Republican Ryan Zinke and Democrat Denise Juneau, both of which expressed remorse.
"My sincerest condolences to the Fellows family, his friends, and followers," said Zinke. "Mike was a true advocate for the Libertarian cause and a good man. He had incredible passion for his platform and he will be missed in Montana."
"I'm shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of Mike Fellows" said Juneau. "My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Mike was a passionate advocate for his values, and I have always admired his courage and dedication to serving Montana. He will be missed."
Fellows has been a champion for the values of the Libertarian party for many years, and was returning from one last campaign stop in Seeley Lake when the crash occurred.
