The National Weather Service office in Missoula is predicting wet snow on some mountain passes in western Montana and eastern Idaho starting Monday afternoon and continuing through Wednesday.

Meteorologist Genke Keno said the cool wet weather will dominate the area for the first part of the week.

"It's mainly going to be concentrating in southwest Montana and in Lemhi County, Idaho," Keno said. "It's definitely possible that we could be seeing some snow accumulation over the mountain passes, such as Lost Trail, Homestake and McDonald passes. here could be some periods of slushy roads up there."

Keno said the amount of snow will vary from location to location.

"For the mountain passes, we're looking for up to four inches," he said. "However, in the back country areas like the Pintlars and in the Anaconda area, the higher elevations could see snow amounts up to one foot."

The National Weather Service said the snow, combined with wind, will also be hazardous for the backcountry terrain. The best chance for snowfall will be Monday afternoon through early Tuesday.
