The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the discovery of a body near the old Smurfitt-Stone Mill near Frenchtown at about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Public Information Officer Brenda Bassett said on Sunday morning that due to poor lighting conditions, detectives decided to begin their investigation at first light on Sunday.

The remains have been sent to the Montana State Crime Lab here in Missoula. The remains had been exposed to the elements for what appeared to have been quite some time, so it was not possible to determine the person’s gender, age or identity for several weeks.

Bassett said more information will be released as soon as it becomes available.
