Earlier this past August in Yellowstone National Park a partial foot was found in a thermal pool by an employee of the park. We haven't heard anything more about the story. The investigation is ongoing at this time. In August, the park issued this statement.

On Tuesday, August 16, 2022, an employee found part of a foot in a shoe floating in Abyss Pool, located in the West Thumb Geyser Basin in the southern part of Yellowstone National Park. An investigation is underway.

Since the discovery, rangers have reopened to visitors the temporarily closed West Thumb Geyser Basin and parking lot.

Abyss Pool has a depth of more than 50 feet and is one of the deepest hot springs in the park. Its temperature is approximately 140 degrees F (60 degrees C). The park does not have any other details to share about this incident currently. We will provide additional information to the public in the next few days.

I reached out to Yellowstone National Park about the current state of the investigation. This is the response I received from the Yellowstone Public Affairs office:

The incident is still under investigation, and we do not have additional information to share at this time. Law enforcement have not made a final ID of the individual...After we have that information, we will release more details to the public.

I reached out to the Teton County Coroner who is handling the investigation and they have no information at this time pending confirmation of identity.

Yellowstone National Park wants to remind all visitors to the park to stay on the trails and boardwalks in the thermal areas for their own safety. We will keep you updated when the identification has been confirmed.
