The annual 'happy' time known as the Bitterroot Winter Special Olympics is January 29 and 30 at Lost Trail Ski Area. Believe it or not, this is the 39th time that Special Olympians have gathered at Lost Trail to compete in winter outdoor activities like skiing and snowshoeing. The lodge is going to be bursting this year with competitors and their support teams, according the organizer Randy Hodgson. He's expecting 16 teams from Western Montana and that's reaching a maximum number for the facility.

The first day, January 29, includes practice rounds, and then, early in the afternoon, the Grand Entry of the teams. Following an evening back in Hamilton, the Olympians get into the actual competition on Wednesday, January 30, with plenty of trips to the medals area. Of course, Hodgson said, volunteers are always welcome, especially on Wednesday and to help clean up the area on Thursday. If you'd like to help, call Carla at (406) 363-3028 in the evenings. Check out their Facebook page, too.
